The course

Start: by the cannon

16:30 · The cannon, Company's Garden

The horde gathers by the cannon at the top of the Company's Garden, 109 Government Avenue: the First World War howitzer of the Artillery Memorial, not the museum steps. Gathering starts at 16:30 and the walk sets off at 17:00. It is free, all ages are welcome and so are pets. Monster Energy, the walk's sponsor, hands out drinks at the start for anyone who wants one.

The Company's Garden

km 0.1 to 0.5 · Government Avenue

Down the path along Government Avenue, under oaks first planted in the time of Simon van der Stel. The Dutch East India Company dug the first beds here in 1652 to grow food for its passing ships, which makes this the oldest garden in South Africa. Tonight the lawns on either side belong to the dead.

Over Wale Street

km 0.5 · Wale Street

Out of the gardens and across Wale Street at the robots, beside St George's Cathedral, Desmond Tutu's "people's cathedral", into St George's Mall. At the top of the mall stands a segment of the Berlin Wall, a gift from the city of Berlin that Nelson Mandela chose in 1996. Cross with the lights: the road is open to traffic.

Down St George's Mall

km 0.6 to 1.3 · St George's Mall

All the way down St George's Mall, the city's long pedestrian street, crossing Strand Street and Riebeek Street at the traffic lights. There are no stops on the way: the horde keeps moving until Thibault Square.

Strand Street

km 1.0 · Strand Street

Strand means beach: Strand Street once ran along the shore of Table Bay, before the Foreshore was won from the sea in the 1930s and 1940s. It is one of the busiest crossings in the city, so cross with the lights. Sailors' legends say the Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship doomed never to make port, still haunts the waters off the Cape.

Halfway: Thibault Square

km 1.2 to 1.3 · Thibault Square

Over Riebeek Street at the lights and into Thibault Square, below One Thibault: 126 metres tall, built from 1969 to 1972 as the BP Centre. This is halfway and the only stop of the walk, for the activations and the group photos. Then the horde turns back.

Back up the mall

km 1.3 to 1.9 · St George's Mall

The horde turns and heads back up St George's Mall the way it came, over Riebeek, Strand and Castle Streets, as far as Longmarket Street. No stops from here to the end, so keep drinking water as you go.

Down Longmarket Street

km 1.9 to 2.3 · Longmarket Street

Left out of the mall and all the way down Longmarket Street, across Adderley, Plein and Corporation Streets, towards the Grand Parade.

The Grand Parade

km 2.3 to 2.5 · Parade Street

Right into Parade Street, beside the Grand Parade, with the Castle of Good Hope beyond it. The castle's best-known ghost story: in 1729 Governor Pieter Gysbert van Noodt sentenced seven deserters to hang, one of them cursed him from the gallows, and the governor was found dead in his chair that same day. His ghost is said to walk the ramparts.

Finish: Paradise Lounge

km 2.5 to 2.6 · Albertus Street

Left into Albertus Street to the end of the walk at the Paradise Lounge, 9 Albertus Street, where the official afterparty runs on the rooftop: 18 and over, with a ticket. The walk raises funds and awareness for the Lucky Lucy Foundation, which rescues and cares for abused and neglected animals.
